The polka dot jersey of Lucien Van Impe - the greatest climber of all time

Small in size but a very big rider... Lucien Van Impe. "The eagle of Toledo" is the last Belgian to win the Tour de France. Lucien started as a professional cyclist in 1969 where he excelled in the longer multi-day races such as the Tour de France. Lucien started 15 times and finished every time. After a third place in 1971 and in 1975 Lucien van Impe won the Tour de France in the hot summer of 1976. In 1981 he finished second. This alone makes him a rider of the extra category. Moreover, Van Impe is one of the few riders who has never been accused of using performance-enhancing drugs.

Especially the climbing capacities of Lucien van Impe were out of this world, he won numerous mountain stages in almost all major tours. On the website climbbybike.com Lucien van Impe is ranked as the best climber of all time. Lucien Van Impe was also the first winner of the mountain classification to wear the polka dot jersey. Van Impe was initially surprised by this very striking and somewhat clownish jersey. But after a few years he got used to it, because he won the polka dot jersey no less than six times; in 1972, 1973, 1975, 1977, 1981 and 1983. He also won 9 mountain stages in the Tour de France, including arrivals on the Glandon (1977, 1981 and 1983), the Galibier (1979), the Aubisque (1983), the Aspin (1971 and 1972) and the Tourmalet (1971, 1975, 1977). In 1987 Van Impe stopped racing.
