The Televizier cycling team of Kees Pellenaars

The Televizier cycling team was set up by Kees Pellenaars in 1964, and it turned out to be a very professional and successful Dutch cycling team. Televizier was a team with a soft G, because most cyclists were from Brabant. Cyclists who rode for Televizier included Jo de Roo, Piet Van Est, Huub Zilverberg, Henk Nijdam, Dick Groeneweg, Jo De Haan, Jos Van Der Vleuten, Piet van Est, Kees Haast, Bas Maliepaard, Gerben Karstens, Leo van Dongen, Jos van der Vleuten, Evert Dolman and Jan Harings. In the period 1964-1967 the Televizier team achieved no less than 124 victories, 58 of them in 1966 including 9 stage wins in the Spanish Vuelta.

In the Tour of 1965, they were immediately in the lead. Gerben Karstens won a stage and Kees Haast came very close to a podium place. Kees Haast was the most striking rider of the Televizier team in this Tour de France. He easily climbed with all the great climbers such as Poulidor, Anquetil, Adorni and Motta. He also climbed higher and higher in the general classification. Unfortunately Kees fell during the descent of the Col de Lautaret. He wanted to continue but when the tour doctor rolled up his trousers the blood spurted out; an arterial bleed. He was not allowed to continue. If this hadn't happened, he would have been standing on the podium in Paris. 
 
Jo de Roo won the prestigious classic Tour of Flanders with Televizier in 1965. During the 1966 Tour de France, the Dutch cycling team was even more successful than the year before; they won a team time trial and Gerben Karstens, Jo de Roo and Henk Nijdam all won a stage.

Team leader Kees Pellenaars was also a very successful cyclist himself. In 1934, he became the first Dutchman to win the World Championship on the road. He also became Dutch Champion in 1936. After he crashed into an American army truck during the Tour of Germany in 1950, he stopped being an active cyclist. A year later, he became the new team leader of the Dutch team in the Tour de France. He did not always go down well with the KNWU and therefore started working with commercial teams. He created the Televizier team and put Dutch cycling back on the map. The team did not do the sponsor Televizier any harm, by the way. The circulation increased to 600,000 copies and was then bought by broadcaster AVRO.
