The former Italian cycling team Molteni was active in cycling from 1958 until the end of 1976. Molteni was a salami producer based in the town of Arcore, in the Milan region. In total, the Molteni cycling team won 663 stages, most of which were won by Eddy Merckx. In the Molteni jersey, Eddy Merckx won, among others, the following races:

  • Milan-San Remo (4 times);
  • Liege-Bastogne-Liege (4 times);
  • The Tour of Italy (3 times);
  • The Tour de France (3 times).

The Molteni team consisted mainly of Belgian and Italian riders. Besides Eddy Merckx, the Italian rider Gianni Motta, the Belgian rider Herman van Springel and the Dutch rider Rini Wagtmans rode in the Molteni jersey. In 1976 Molteni stopped sponsoring the cycling team definitively.

The French cycling team Peugeot is one of the most successful teams in cycling history. The team was founded in 1901 and was active in cycling until 1986. From its creation until 1904, the French automobile and bicycle brand Peugeot was its main sponsor. From 1905, Peugeot teamed up with several co-sponsors, including Dunlop and BP-Michelin. Meanwhile, Peugeot itself was also active as a co-sponsor.

Some of Peugeot's notable victories include the Tour de France (10 wins overall), Paris-Roubaix (6 wins overall), the Tour of Lombardy (4 wins overall) and the Tour of Spain (3 wins overall). Belgian rider Eddy Merckx, Dutchman Hennie Kuiper and Frenchman Bernard Thévenet among others rode in Peugeot jerseys.

Since 1927, the world champion rides in the rainbow jersey. The name of the sponsor(s) is the only thing that makes every rainbow jersey unique. It is always a white jersey with the same coloured horizontal stripes. The stripes are always blue, red, black, yellow and green. Nowadays many riders also choose to wear matching trousers. The rainbow jersey is never worn during the world championships themselves. Ex-world champions can be recognised by the rainbow stripes on the ends of the collar and sleeves.
