|Since 1927, the world champion rides in the rainbow jersey. The name of the sponsor(s) is the only thing that makes every rainbow jersey unique. It is always a white jersey with the same coloured horizontal stripes. The stripes are always blue, red, black, yellow and green. Nowadays many riders also choose to wear matching trousers. The rainbow jersey is never worn during the world championships themselves. Ex-world champions can be recognised by the rainbow stripes on the ends of the collar and sleeves.
